Free credit reports can shed light on your bad credit history. It will help you begin the process of cleaning up your credit rating. For a stronger application on a lease, loan or credit card, obtain a copy of your free credit reports before you look for a lender.

Free credit reports are available to those who are unemployed and plan to seek employment in the next 60 days, have been denied employment based on credit reports, are welfare recipients or are victims of fraud. Credit bureaus will issue a free credit report upon written request, providing you meet one of the above criteria.

When you apply for a credit card you can receive free credit reports, whether you are approved or not. All you have to do is write to the same agency where your creditor obtained a copy, and request your report.

All requests for free credit reports require you to include your full name (including Jr., Sr., II etc.), your social security number, a copy of your utility or some other bill, a copy of your driver’s license, your current and previous addresses within the last five years, as well as your date of birth, your current employer,  your signature and your home telephone number.
