What is consumer credit counseling, or more generally, what is credit counseling? Credit counseling is the advice that is given to individuals by professional counselors about how to use credit responsibly thus avoiding serious debt. If debt does occur, however, credit counselors will provide information about how to get out of it in the most efficient means possible. Consumer credit counseling then is a counseling service provided to all individuals who purchase public goods on a regular basis.

Although credit counselors are employed to aid consumers in proper credit management, every individual must be prepared to enter into counseling with caution. Like other forms of counseling services, consumer credit counseling can give out inaccurate, in some case even fraudulent, advice. To help to prevent this kind of bad credit advice, a good precautionary step to take would be to contact a local consumer protection agency. These agencies can be found listed in the telephone book under city agencies.

Most consumer credit counselors can be found in virtually every city working for non-profit organizations know as Consumer Credit Counseling Services or CCCS’s for short. CCCS’s provide individual and consumer credit counseling to those with serious financial problems for a small fee. Being non-profit, Consumer Credit Counseling Services receive funding from banks, consumer finance companies, credit unions and other groups and individuals interested in efficient community running.

Once a person has found a credit counselor their financial situation will be assessed through the analyzing of their personal credit report and past credit history. Repayment plans may then be instituted with the support of a person’s creditors contacted by the credit counselor. Future financial difficulties are also avoided through education provided by the credit counselor on proper budgeting techniques. Thus, consumer credit counseling proves to be an effective means of controlling individual finances and debt.
