There are many ways to manage credit card debt which includes the locating of a credit agency that provides the service of credit card debt management. Your first resort should be to rely on yourself and develop a plan to attack the debt problem.

You can attempt to solve your own debt problems without outside help but there are times when a debt counseling firm may prove to be your best solution to control credit card debt. It is up to you to make a reasoned decision bout which route to take.

Credit card use requires a you to be cautious about your expenditures as well as informed about proper financial management and budgeting. To most people this is not new information and they practice good money management habits ... however, circumstances can at times create problems and because credit cards often don't "seem like money" card debt can escalate.

If you plan to tackle the problem yourself, a simple, tested plan is below to help you get started.

Review and Analyze Your Expenditure and Debt Situation

Use the four steps below to develop a 'Paydown Amount' to set aside monthly to pay extra on debts. 10% of your gross is a good target.

  1. Review the last 6-8 months of expenses and make a list of anything that can be reduced at all except routine items such as bills & taxes.

  2. Separate the items into categories i.e. meals, groceries, entertainment, savings, and so on.

  3. Review each item and create a list showing how to save in each area and how much can be saved.

  4. Use the tips and related features below to develop your own ideas for how to save on each entry aiming for a total of 10% of your gross.

  5. Develop Your Debt Elimination Schedule by following the next 4 steps.

  • For each debt, list and divide the total payoff amount by the monthly payment. Assign a numeric sequence starting with "1" for the lowest division answer, "2" for the next lowest, and so on.

  • Each month make the normal minimum payment to each debt except debt #1 (lowest division answer) to which you apply the 'Paydown Amount' from above. Repeat until debt #1 is paid.

  • Pay the minimum monthly on all bills except debt #2. To debt #2, apply the minimum monthly + Paydown Amount + the former debt #1 payment. Continue until debt #2 is paid.

  • Start on debt #3 with the minimum payment + AC + former debt #1 + former debt #2, and keep following this process until all debt is cleared.

Tips:

Should an emergency occur pause the schedule then resume it when the situation has been resolved.
