Credit reporting agencies provide a comprehensive view of your credit history. A credit report agency will supply both personal and business credit information pertaining to you and /or your company. You must provide certain personal information about yourself or your company before this confidential information will be released to you in the form of a credit report.

The credit reporting agencies gather your personal and business information, including current and previous address, job history, credit inquiries, late payments, collections and public records such as bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, garnishment orders. This information will prove invaluable to you as a source of reference when you are planning to finance a vehicle, apply for a line of credit, home mortgage or credit card.

Credit grantors use the information recorded on your credit report to evaluate your application for credit and make a decision based largely on the contents of this report. Your credit report will also contain a credit score or rating of your calculated credit worthiness. This score can range anywhere from 500 to 800 with 800 being the highest and best credit rating.

You can dispute the contents of your credit report at any time. It should be mentioned that there are several major credit reporting agencies and it is possible that there could be different information collected by the various companies. It is always a good idea to check your personal history with all of the major credit reporting agencies.

A new federal law has been enacted in the United States that will provide free access to your credit report once a year so you can choose from one of the various credit reporting agencies.
